Spooky Horse Tales and Legends

As long as there has been a human and horse partnership, there have been stories of horses that are pure fantasy and others that could have an element of truth. These stories come from both ancient history and more recent events. I have found one that is fascinating as well as a bit creepy.

I would like to tell you about the legend of the Kelpie. A Kelpie is a shape shifting water spirit that has its origins in Scottish mythology. To explain it in better detail as well as tell the tale of one of the stories that surround this horse shaped spirit, here is a video about the Kelpie.

The Kelpie story

That story is rather mild compared to the in depth mythology of the Kelpie in this next video. It goes into great detail of the many ways they can trap their victims and how to recognize one when you see it. The Kelpie, it seems is not a good natured spirit but one to be avoided at all cost. It also goes into the Scottish history and fascination of these beasts.

There is a movie based loosely on the Kelpie legend. That movie is called “Into the West”. If you get a chance to see it, you will not be disappointed. It is not your typical kids with horses movie. Below is the movie trailer for it.
