Happy 2017 the year of the microchip

2017 should be the year that horses follow dogs with micro-chipping.

It is not that micro-chipping horses is nothing new, in fact it has been going on for many years now. What has changed is that the USEF (United State Equestrian Federation) has mandated that all horses competing for points in any of their sanctioned events must be micro-chipped by December 2017.  There is a grace period of one year, then in 2019 all horses competing in their events must be micro-chipped.

It seems that there has been a bit of fraud going on with reporting horses’ ages, names and other details to the USEF, so it came down to this.

Europe on the other hand has required micro-chipping of competition horses since 2009.
