I am one of those rushed horse owners. I have a full time job outside the home and yet keep my horses at home. I don’t have the advantage of having my horses at a boarding stable where they are fed and their stalls cleaned each day. I have to do that work. It is the early morning hours that are the most rushed for me as a horse owner. My horses are in the barn at night and are let out each morning into pasture. Depending on the time of year there might be snow on the ground or …Read more »

It has been my experience that when horse rescues are interviewed they over estimate the costs of feeding the horses they have in their care. I think that is for the sole reason to get people to donate to their cause. News reports like the one below often exaggerate the costs of horse ownership. The amount mentioned in the video for grain is not only unbelievable but most rescues do not feed grain to the horses because it compromises a horses’ system that has been starved. Grain is for horses that are worked hard and need extra energy calories, not …Read more »

What is rain rot? It is a skin fungus that forms between the fur and the surface of the skin. Commonly found in wet climates on horses that do not have proper shelter to let them dry off thoroughly. It forms along the top line of the horse, most commonly on the flat part of the back and rump. It can be just small patches or large areas. The best way to describe rain rot is that it is fur covered scabs that are easily peeled off of the horse with pus of the bottom of them. Not a nice condition at …Read more »

Horses seem to have it bad all over the world. I have heard of horse rescues, both private and public groups in the USA, UK and Australia but when I found one in Cairo I now know the horses in those other countries are not that bad off. The horse rescue in Cairo has possibly the worst cases of animal neglect and abuse I have ever seen. Most of the horses seem to be the result of being used until they literally drop. The rescue has a Facebook page with plenty of photos. The Facebook page is called Prince Fluffy Kareem.  There is …Read more »

I am not on to give treats to my horses everyday, in fact it is more like once or twice a month that they might get a treat. I don’t like to buy those premade treats that are sold in the feed stores, like Mrs Pastures Horse Cookies , although I have bought and used them in the past. I prefer using carrots, apples and watermelon rinds as treats and so do the horses. I always seem to have a supply of carrots or apples around for human consumption  and when the carrots or apples are not being used by …Read more »

Does it surprise you that horses can be bred with other equines to produce hybrids? It really shouldn’t since the mule is a hybrid cross between a horse and a donkey. The type of mule depends on the breed of horse and the breed of donkey used in the mating. The larger/smaller the parents the larger/smaller the off spring will be. So what other kinds of crosses are there? All off spring that resulted from crossings of horse and closely related equines (donkey, ass, zebra) are called hybrids. The great majority of hybrids are sterile, meaning that they themselves cannot …Read more »
